Season 2011-12: A Year of Musical Magic and Extraordinary Artistry
Works by Rachmaninoff, Bartok, Mozart, Strauss, Brahms and a Night Filled with Opera Greats Highlight the Season’s Programs, Soloists Include New York Phil’s Principal Oboist, Liang Wang, Roberta Rust And Russian Pianist Valeriya Polunina
The Redlands Symphony kicks off its 2011-2012 season on October 22, 2011 with a concert featuring BRUCKNER’S Symphony #4 and BARTOK’S Concerto #3, with pianist Roberta Rust performing as soloist. Maestro Jon Robertson will conduct.
"Our 2011-12 season at Redlands Symphony is designed to highlight the magic that music brings into our lives," noted Maestro Robertson in making the announcement about the new season, "We are also eager to better acquaint our audience with the extraordinary artists – musical magicians, I call them – who comprise our orchestra. We are so fortunate to have some of the region’s finest musical talent playing in the orchestra. They are gifted musicians and remarkable artists who bring to life the great musical works we perform for our audience."
The new season’s second concert on November 12, 2011 will feature the gifts of piano soloist Valeriya Polunina playing the RACHMANINOFF Piano Concerto No. 2. The program will begin with DVORAK’S powerful Symphony #7.
The third concert on January 21, 2012 will feature the debut solo performance of the winner of the University of Redlands School of Music annual Concerto Competition. Co Nguyen will conduct the program which will also include WEBER’S Oberon Overture and Symphony #4 by BRAHMS.
“We are very proud of our partnership with the University of Redlands and its School of Music,” explained Maestro Robertson, “and our ability to provide the great new talent coming out of the music program here at the University in a performance with the Symphony is a great pleasure. In past years these concerts have delighted our audiences who are extremely excited to be hearing and seeing young performers at the very start of their careers.”
The Symphony’s fourth concert of the new season on February 11, 2012, offers an evening of passion and romance just in time for Valentine’s Day. A selection of the greatest love arias from the Italian operatic repertory will be presented, conducted by Maestro Jon Robertson. These timeless love songs from PUCCINI, VERDI, MASCAGNI, BELLINI and TCHAIKOVSKY are certain to create a moving and memorable evening. Soloists for this performance will be announced early in the season.
On April 14, 2012, the Symphony offers a unique opportunity for local audiences to experience the extraordinary talents of one of the world’s most accomplished musical artists. Liang Wang, principal oboist from the New York Philharmonic will perform the STRAUSS Oboe Concerto as part of a program that also includes MOZART’S Overture to Figaro and HAYDN’S Symphony #104. The program also includes the premiere of a new work for the oboe by the Symphony’s own principal oboist FRANCISCO CASTILLO. Jon Robertson will conduct.
Finally on May 19, 2012, the season will close with a concert comprised of programs all “Made in America.” The concert will open with Symphonic Metamorphosis by HINDEMITH and then moves on to MICHAEL DAUGHERTY’S uproariously entertaining nod to the piano stylings of Liberace, La Tombeau de Liberace. The evening concludes with ELLINGTON’S The River, featuring piano soloist Lara Urrutia.
Concert performances are on Saturday nights and begin at 8 PM. Concerts are performed in the Memorial Chapel on the campus of the University of Redlands in Redlands, California. Ample free parking is available adjacent to the Chapel. A conversation about the concert with the conductor takes place in the Chapel before each concert and begins at 7:15 PM.
Current subscribers will begin receiving their invitation to renew this week. People who have purchased single tickets to a Symphony concert will also be invited to subscribe and will be seated after current subscribers have been accommodated. The deadline for renewals is August 1, 2011. After that date, all unclaimed seats will be released and new subscribers will be seated. Single tickets for the new season will go on sale September 1, 2011. Single ticket prices begin at $15.
