The complicated romantic lives of anthropomorphic kitchen utensils serve as the plot of Czech composer Bohuslav Martinů’s 1927 ballet, La Revue de Cuisine (a hard-to-swallow bite of information, to be sure). The main characters are the Pot and the Lid (a seemingly happily married couple, of course), and the seductive whisk and dishcloth.

Felix Mendelssohn’s second piano trio is a late work. It is, in fact the last chamber work that the composer lived to see published. It was composed and premiered in 1845, only two years before his untimely death at the age of 38.

Program Notes

A soldier on leave is headed home to visit his loved ones. On the way, he is accosted by a mysterious stranger who offers him a magical book in exchange for his violin...

Stravinsky drew upon the Russian folk tales of his childhood to create a piece preserving the charm and wit of his popular theatrical masterpieces (Petrushka, The Rite of Spring) in a medium responding to the financial and cultural challenges of post-war Europe.

Kirsten Johansen is a dancer, choreographer, and veteran of numerous junior colleges, San Francisco State and Tisch School of the Arts (BFA 1998, MFA 1999). Her work has been presented in Puebla, Mexico; Portland, OR; and New York City. Kirsten has taught at colleges in California and New York, at La Universidad de Las Americas in Puebla, worked with The Lyon Opera Ballet in France, and is a founding member of OddJobs Performance.

Tony award-winning actor John Rubinstein created the title role in the Broadway musical PIPPIN and played the Wizard in WICKED in LA for 18 months. He has starred in two TV series, close to 200 episodes and MOWs, and dozens of films. He is active as a director for stage and screen in New York, LA, and Williamstown, is a composer of film music and over 75 TV scores, has hosted two radio programs, recorded over 100 audiobooks, and currently teaches musical theater and directs at USC.
